Ring Lights to Take Your Photos to the Next Level

I consider myself to be somewhat savvy when it comes to taking a decent picture. I am by no means an actual photographer, but you wouldn’t know it thanks to my cell phone and ring light.

Having a ring lightOpens in a new tab. helped the look of my photos, and I must say my social media feed game is impenetrably strong.

What is a ring light?

Typically, a ring light is many small light bulbs arranged in a circle or one larger bulb formed into a circular shape.

A single ring light can offer what it used to take multiple photography lights to do. Long gone are the days of having a whole production team behind one shadowless and flawless photo.

This is the sort of Jetsons era invention we never knew we needed.

Photographers can position the light around the lens of their camera, or in some cases, put their camera in the center and take a phenomenal photo.

The future is now, and making a picture look Instagram-worthy has never been so easy.

Why you need a ring light

Social media first started as a way to share silly details of my life. I would take a quick pic of my slaved-over dinner here, perhaps a simple selfie there when my makeup was on-point.

My photos were about as exciting to others as you would imagine them to be, aka not exciting at all.

It wasn’t so much my skills that lacked as it was the fact that I was taking pictures on a cellphone.

It isn’t wholly my phone’s fault, but when paired with sub-par lighting conditions, you can only imagine what the photos did for my complexion. *Shudders*

Things to consider

I get it. You want it, and you’re about .03 seconds away from searching around for the perfect one for you. I’ve been there. Could you hang in with me for a few more seconds?

Before you jump into the ring light deep end, consider what you are going to be using your ring light for. Some factors come into play, such as how accurate you want colors to come across.

The higher the lumens and color rating index, the better lighting and color you’re going to have.

These sorts of factors may be more important to someone photographing or filming makeup looks or objects that require more attention to detail.

Another factor to consider is how you are going to be taking pictures. Are you a snap-and-go person, or do you prefer more staged photos and videos? Whatever your style is, there is a ring light to fit your needs.

Whether you shoot your pictures with an iPhone or a DSLR, your social media platforms can benefit from a ring light.

Another reason you should consider getting a ring light for yourself is for videography.

If you create YouTube or Instagram videos, your production quality will go up, up, up with the addition of a ring light.
